What the level 3 paralegal apprenticeship involves
So, you’re looking for an apprenticeship programme. But what’s actually involved in the level 3 CILEX paralegal apprenticeship?
The apprenticeship is designed to equip apprentices with the legal knowledge, skills, and behaviours required for a successful career in law. It consists of two main stages:
- On-programme learning
- End-point assessment
We’ve provided a summary of each stage here for your convenience…
On-programme learning
This phase lasts around 24 months and combines work-based learning, formal training, and off-the-job development.

Knowledge Training – Covers legal principles, professional conduct, research skills, and relevant areas of law.

Skills Development – Involves drafting legal documents, client communication, legal research, and case management.

Portfolio Building – Apprentices gather 10 pieces of evidence demonstrating competency in legal practice.

Off-the-Job Training (OTJT) – At least 20% of working hours spent on training, including workshops, self-study, and shadowing professionals.

Gateway Assessment – The employer and training provider confirm the apprentice is ready for the final assessment.
End-point assessment
The EPA is the final assessment phase, evaluating the apprentice’s ability to apply their learning in practice. It includes:
1. Portfolio & Professional Discussion
– Apprentices submit a portfolio (10 pieces of evidence).
-A one-hour discussion explores their legal knowledge, problem-solving, and ethical understanding.
2. Research Project
– A 3,000-word legal research project on a work-related topic.
3. Presentation & Questioning
– A 25-minute presentation based on the research project.
– A Q&A session to assess their understanding and application of legal principles.

As you’d expect from an apprenticeship, our CILEX level 3 paralegal apprenticeship course has been designed to work closely alongside your role, involving a great deal of on-the-job training as well as the more traditional tuition that we’ll provide.

Typically, people take two years to complete their apprenticeship, however, if you take longer, we’ll still be there to support you all the way to the end.
How to apply
To apply for this apprenticeship you must be employed in a legal environment and have your employers permission to undertake this apprenticeship.
Provided you are working in a qualifying role, you should be eligible for the government’s apprenticeship funding for your course.

1. Find an apprenticeship
If you’re eager to start an apprenticeship in law or any other field, your top priority is finding one. Unlike traditional qualifications, apprenticeships involve on-the-job training, so you’ll need to search for the ideal opportunity, much like you would when looking for a job.

You’ll find that the application process closely resembles applying for a job. Here are a few of the key considerations when completing this step:
- Make your CV and cover letter stand out and tailor them for each application
- Research the company’s history, values and recent events/performance
- Be professional throughout the process, just as you would on the job
- Don’t give up! The apprenticeship market is competitive, so don’t expect to be accepted at the first attempt. Keep trying!
